Gender-Based Violence (GBV) remains one of the most pervasive yet underreported human rights violations globally, affecting millions of individuals regardless of age, ethnicity, or socioeconomic status. At Freedom for Life Initiative (FFLI), we are committed to eliminating all forms of violence rooted in gender inequality, particularly against women, girls, and vulnerable groups, who are disproportionately impacted. Our approach is rooted in both prevention and support, addressing the root causes of GBV and providing holistic care for survivors.
The ultimate weakness of violence is that it is a descending spiral, begetting the very thing it seeks to destroy. Instead of diminishing evil, it multiplies it. Through violence you may murder the liar, but you cannot murder the lie, nor establish the truth.
In Nigeria, gender-based violence takes various forms, including physical, sexual, emotional, and economic abuse. These forms of violence are often exacerbated by societal norms, economic pressures, and systemic inequalities. For many survivors, GBV is a barrier to achieving their full potential, affecting their physical and mental health, limiting their economic opportunities, and restricting their educational and personal growth. We recognize that the eradication of GBV is critical to achieving a society where human rights are fully realized, and everyone has the opportunity to live in dignity and safety.
Freedom for Life Initiative tackles gender-based violence through an integrated approach that focuses on:
We engage communities, policymakers, and local leaders in open dialogues to raise awareness about the impacts of GBV, challenging the social norms that perpetuate gender inequality. Through awareness campaigns, such as our recent program marking the International Day against Gender-Based Violence, we promote a message of zero tolerance for any form of violence.
Educating the public on the rights and protections available to them is crucial to preventing GBV. FFLI organizes training programs for local communities, schools, and peer educators to spread knowledge and resources that empower individuals to recognize and challenge abusive behaviors.
We provide free legal services, counseling, and other forms of support to survivors, ensuring they have access to the resources they need to heal and rebuild their lives. Our team includes trained caregivers and professionals who offer a safe and supportive environment for survivors seeking assistance.
FFLI collaborates with local, national, and international partners, including civil society organizations, health services, and law enforcement, to build a coordinated response system. By working together, we can enhance survivor support services, strengthen community prevention mechanisms, and advocate for policies that protect vulnerable populations.
Our GBV initiatives include:
Through our GBV programs, Freedom for Life Initiative has made significant strides in creating safer communities, particularly in Northern Nigeria. In recent campaigns, we've reached hundreds of individuals through educational programs and trained dozens of peer educators to advocate against gender-based violence. Our work with school-based awareness programs has led to the establishment of dedicated clubs, fostering a new generation that is educated and proactive about gender equality and non-violence.
